C&O Mile 70 - 85: Shepherdstown & Antietam

This area’s features are the college town of Shepherdstown WV accessible from the towpath by the Rt 34 bridge.  Here one will find numerous hotels, B&B’s, restaurants, a bike shop, and other services.  The Bavarian Inn is a nice place to stay with great food, although reservations are required, and the Inn fills up quickly.

In 1862, as the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, the Battle of Antietam, began to unfold in their backyards, some residents of the border town of Sharpsburg, Maryland, took refuge in a nearby rock shelter called Killiansburg Cave 20 yards from the towpath at mile marker 75.7.  There are other similar caves along the towpath with mist of them referred to as Snyder’s Landing Caves.

.

If you have time, a visit to nearby Antietam battlefield is a nice diversion of about a 2 mile ride.  Easiest way is north to Snyder’s Landing Road at milepost 77.   Make your way through the town of Sharpsburg and turn left onto Route 65.  The entrance to the Battlefield is about a mile ahead on the right.  Stop at the visitor center and take advantage of their offerings.  The town of Sharpsburg also has B&B’s restaurants and other services
